Pumping and sewerage in Lucavsala - allotments, events and the Daugava floodplain

Pumping and sewerage in Lucavsala is mainly seasonal work. This island in the Daugava has parks, allotments, sports grounds and event areas, but little permanent development, so wastewater here arises where people spend time in the warm season.

We pump out dry toilets, portable toilets and small holding tanks, help event organisers and sports facilities, and advise on which tank suits a site that can flood. Pumping up to 4 m³ costs from €75.

What needs servicing in Lucavsala

There are few permanent houses on the island, so a private home's septic tank is not typical work here. Instead, there are allotments, which may have a dry toilet or a small tank; sports and leisure sites with toilets and showers; and event grounds where portable cabins are set up for a while. Each of these needs a different approach.

Site What usually needs pumping out What to keep in mind
Allotment Dry toilet, small tank Narrow paths, the truck stays by the road
Sports or leisure site Holding tank by the toilets and showers Access to the lid, emptying before the spring floods
Event Portable toilets Pumping before, during and after the event

The Daugava floodplain: why the tank must be sealed

Lucavsala lies on the Daugava floodplain, and the land can flood at high water. If a holding tank or toilet pit is not sealed, floodwater gets in and washes the contents out into the surroundings and the river. That's why only a sealed, anchored tank with a tight-fitting lid that keeps surface water out is suitable on the island.

On a site that floods, a plastic tank is anchored against flotation, because saturated ground pushes it upwards. An old metal drum or a pit without a bottom is better replaced with a new tank than pumped out every year to remove the water that seeps into it from the ground.

The practical schedule is simple: empty the tank before the spring floods and in autumn when the season ends, rather than leaving it full. More about tanks: holding tank installation and holding tank pumping.

Allotments: dry toilets and small tanks

The contents of a dry toilet are thick, so they are pumped out with a powerful vacuum pump, sometimes after first being diluted with water. The paths between allotments are narrow, so the truck stays on the main road and we run the hose to the toilet. If neighbouring plot holders book the same day, several toilets can be emptied in one trip.

In your request, state where the plot is (without an address: a pin on the map or the nearest landmark), how many metres it is from the road to the toilet and whether the gate will be open. Dry toilet pumping in Lucavsala; for several plots together: pumping in a garden community.

Events and sports facilities

For event organisers, we pump out portable toilets and tanks. We plan how often according to the number of visitors and the volume of the cabins, so in your request state the number of cabins, the event days and where the cabins will stand. We don't rent out toilets; we pump out the ones already on site. More details: portable toilet pumping.

Place the cabins so that they can be reached over a hard surface and the hose doesn't have to be dragged through the spectator area. On grass after rain, the heavy truck can get stuck, and then all the cabins have to be serviced from the roadside.

Sports and leisure sites with a permanent tank should book pumping when it is nearly full; after each visit you receive a certificate: pumping for businesses.

Access via Salu tilts

Lucavsala is reached via the Salu tilts junctions. On the days of big events, traffic and entry arrangements change, so we agree the time with the organiser and find out in advance which road the truck can take and how far in it can drive. If pumping is needed during the event, the organiser must provide a clear route for it that doesn't cross the flow of visitors.

The rules also apply to seasonal tanks

Riga City Council Binding Regulations No. 66 apply to all decentralised sewage systems in the administrative territory of Riga, and so to the islands as well. A holding tank at a seasonal building must be registered with the Riga Housing and Environment Department just like one at a house, and it must be emptied as often as the water consumption requires.

A seasonal tank may only be emptied by a pumping contractor that the Riga Housing and Environment Department has entered in its register. For each removal, the contractor issues a certificate with the address, date and volume. National regulations require you to keep it for at least two years, and a holding tank must be sealed so that wastewater does not leak out and no smell arises.

Frequently asked questions

My allotment only has a dry toilet. Can it be pumped out?

Yes. We first dilute the thick contents with water and then pump them out with a vacuum pump. It's important that the hose can be run to the toilet; tell us the distance from the road.

Do you rent out toilets for events?

No, we don't offer toilet rental. We pump out the toilets and tanks already on site and plan the pumping visits according to the number of visitors.

Can you pump out when nobody is at the plot?

Yes, if the gate will be open or we know the code, and your request describes where the toilet or tank is. We leave or send the pumping certificate, as agreed.

There is water in the tank after the floods. What should I do?

If there is water in the tank after the floods, it is not sealed or the lid lets water in. Pump it out once the water around it has gone down, then repair or replace the tank; otherwise this will happen again every spring.
