The neighbourhood lies at the mouth of the Daugava on the Gulf of Riga, next to dunes and protected nature areas, and wind, sand and damp here affect both the soil and the tank lids. For low-rise houses we pump out septic tanks and holding tanks, build infiltration and install biological wastewater treatment plants (BIO plants); for apartment blocks and port businesses we service pump stations and tanks.
Sandy soil: an advantage, with one condition
If your plot is sandy, it lets water through well, and a drain field or drains can usually be built after the septic tank. On the coast, though, the distance to the groundwater is decisive. If it is close to the surface, the settled water reaches the groundwater almost untreated; then the infiltration is raised on a mound or a biological treatment plant is chosen instead.
Before we quote, we look at the soil layers and the water level in a test pit. Only then can we tell you whether a septic tank with infiltration will be enough or whether you need a BIO plant.
State regulations allow settled water from a septic tank to be discharged into the environment only through an infiltration system: a filtration field, drains, a sand and gravel filter, a filtration ditch or well, or a reed bed. A septic tank whose water simply drains away into the ground without such a system does not meet the requirements.
Which system suits a coastal plot
| Situation after the test pit | What we usually recommend |
|---|---|
| Sand, groundwater deep down | Septic tank with a drain field or drains |
| Sand, groundwater close to the surface | Septic tank with raised infiltration, or a BIO plant |
| Peat or clay under a layer of sand | BIO plant discharging to a ditch, or a sealed holding tank |
| The house is used only in summer | Septic tank or holding tank; a BIO plant needs a regular load |
When an old building is being converted into a home or a workshop, we first find out where the existing pipes run and whether there are old tanks in the yard. We pump these out, clean them and fill them in before building the new system, so that the old tank does not keep collecting water under the lawn.
Dunes and protected areas next door
If your plot borders dunes or a protected nature area, check whether any restrictions apply to the property before a new plant or infiltration is built. They are shown in the Land Register and in Riga's spatial plan; ask the building authority whether the work needs approval.
Restrictions can determine where you may dig, where the tank may go and where treated water may be discharged. That is why we design a BIO plant outlet to a ditch or into the ground only once these questions are clear.
Wind, sand and lids
Wind carries sand across the lawn, and a low-set lid can be buried by drifting sand within a year. Find the lid and clear it before pumping. If the lid sits right at ground level, it is worth fitting an extension neck so that sand and rainwater do not get into the tank.
When we service a BIO plant on the coast, we check the compressor air filter and the lid seal, because sand and damp put them under strain. BIO plant maintenance costs from €160.
Apartment blocks, the port and seasonal sites
- For apartment blocks: servicing of sewage pump stations where wastewater is pumped on.
- For port and fishing businesses: septic tank pumping for businesses on a regular schedule, with documents.
- For leisure sites and events: portable toilet pumping and dry toilet pumping.
Riga rules in Daugavgrīva
Daugavgrīva is a Riga neighbourhood, so septic tanks, holding tanks and BIO plants are registered with the Riga Housing and Environment Department; a new system within a month of being built. Septic tank sludge must be removed at least once a year, a factory-made plant is serviced according to the manufacturer's documentation, and the pumping frequency for a holding tank is calculated from water consumption.

Getting there through Bolderāja
The road to Daugavgrīva is Daugavgrīvas šoseja through Bolderāja, and the port infrastructure and the distance mean we agree the time in advance. A heavy vacuum tanker can get stuck on a sandy verge or on a lawn, so tell us how far the lid is from a hard surface. We do not add a mileage charge, because Daugavgrīva is part of Riga.
Prices in Daugavgrīva
