Iecava is in Bauska Municipality, so the Bauska Municipality rules apply here, along with its own co-financing programme for connections. The drive from Riga is longer than to Ķekava, so we help you plan pumping so that the trip pays off.
Flat land, a river and the edge of the countryside
Iecava lies on the Zemgale Plain by the Iecava river. The town has a compact centre with apartment blocks, detached-house districts around it, and beyond them farmland and production sites begin. This page is about the town of Iecava; in the parish and the rest of Bauska Municipality some of the rules differ.
A flat plot has little natural fall. So a drain field or a BIO plant outlet to a ditch cannot always be built to work by gravity, and a pump chamber is needed in between. The Zemgale Plain often has heavier, more clayey soil that absorbs water slowly, so before a drain field is built you need to check how quickly the soil lets water through. Near the river and in hollows, groundwater can rise in spring. There we install a plastic tank with anchoring, and when pumping we also bear in mind that an empty tank in high water can lift upwards.
Bauska Municipality rules in Iecava
Since the 2021 reform, Iecava has been part of Bauska Municipality. Since July 2022, Bauska Municipality Binding Regulations No. 16 on decentralised sewage systems have applied to the town of Iecava; the former Iecava Municipality had no such regulations.
- Register: the system is registered with the water utility company. In Iecava this is SIA “Bauskas novada komunālserviss”, which absorbed the former SIA “Dzīvokļu komunālā saimniecība” in November 2023. You submit a first registration declaration (Annex 2 to the Binding Regulations).
- Changes: a new owner, a different system or connection to the network must be reported within a month.
- Septic tank: pumped out at least once a year.
- Holding tank: frequency based on water consumption and tank volume; without a meter, 1.5 m³ per person per month is assumed.
- BIO plant of up to 5 m³ per day: maintenance according to the manufacturer's instructions or the opinion of a competent company, and a maintenance declaration is submitted to the water utility by 1 April every year.
- Pumping contractor: registered contractors only; the municipal register, updated on 02.12.2025, has five entries.
An annex to the regulations excludes seven villages of Iecava parish from their scope: Audrupi, Dimzukalns, Dzelzāmurs, Dzimtmisa, Rosme, Zālīte and Zorģi. If your house is in one of them or on a rural homestead, check the requirements with Bauska Municipality. For breaches, a private individual can be fined up to 70 penalty units.

Connecting to the network: up to €1,500 from Bauska Municipality
If there is a mains sewer in your street in Iecava, Bauska Municipality Binding Regulations No. 4 (2024) provide support: €20 for each metre of connection pipe and €100 for each manhole, up to €1,500 in total per connection. For example, for a 30 m connection pipe with two manholes this would be 30 × €20 + 2 × €100 = €800.
The full cost is covered for needy and low-income households, families with three or more children, people with a Group I or II disability, politically repressed persons and those who took part in clearing up after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident.
The money is paid out after the connection pipe has been built and surveyed and a contract has been signed with the water utility. The programme depends on the annual budget (€6,000 was allocated for 2024) and is announced once the budget is approved. We found no round for 2026, so before construction ask the municipality whether and when there will be one.

Septic tank pumping in Iecava: planning the trip along the A7
We drive to Iecava along the A7, the Via Baltica, through Ķekava. Through traffic to Bauska and Lithuania keeps this road busy, so we agree the time in advance. Travel outside Riga is ~€1/km, and for Iecava that is already a noticeable part of the price.
That is why it pays to pump out fully and in one go. If the holding tank is 8–10 m³, we send the largest tanker (up to 10 m³ from €110), so there is no need for a second trip. If the property has both a septic tank for the house and, say, a holding tank for a sauna or an outbuilding, we empty both and charge by the combined volume.
Septic tank pumping in Iecava costs from €75 for up to 4 m³ and from €90 for up to 6 m³. BIO plant maintenance (from €160) can be combined with the same trip, and afterwards we issue the document you need for the declaration due by 1 April.
