This densely populated eastern neighbourhood of apartment blocks has no detached-house streets, so septic tanks and holding tanks are rare here. What is needed is grease trap cleaning in shopping centres and school kitchens, maintenance of pump stations and drainage wells in the newer developments, and pumping water out of flooded underground rooms. Grease trap cleaning costs from €90.
What we service in Pļavnieki and what we don't
| Situation | What helps |
|---|---|
| A blocked soil stack or sink in a flat | A plumber or the building manager; no pumping needed |
| A grease trap in a café, shop or school kitchen | Grease trap cleaning with a vacuum tanker |
| A pump station or drainage well in a newer building | Pumping out, cleaning, checking the floats and the pump |
| A flooded underground room or basement | Pumping out the water and taking it away |
If you're not sure who to contact, start with the building manager. If the problem is in a tank, separator or well that can be pumped out, send us a request.
Access to inner courtyards: where the truck can stand
In Pļavnieki, the main practical question is often not the tank itself but the way to it. Inner courtyards have narrow driveways, parking spaces and playgrounds, while a vacuum tanker is a truck that needs free space and a hard surface.
- State which street to enter the courtyard from and whether there is a barrier.
- Ask the building manager whether the parking spaces by the lid can be cleared during the work.
- Measure the distance from the driveway to the separator or well: hoses can be joined, but a longer distance takes more time.
- The truck doesn't drive on lawns or pavements that aren't designed for heavy machinery.
Deglava iela and Lubānas iela are the neighbourhood's main links to the centre, and traffic on them is heavy. It isn't safe to stop on these streets to work, so we plan the work from the courtyard side or from a shopping centre's loading area.
Shopping centres and school kitchens
Pļavnieki has schools and shopping centres with catering. In a big kitchen, the grease layer in the separator builds up fast, and if cleaning is put off, the grease flows on into the building's outlet and hardens where it can no longer be pumped out, only flushed out.
When cleaning, we pump out the entire contents of the separator, clean the baffles and refill the separator with water after the work so that it carries on working straight away. The certificate with the date and volume can be shown at an inspection. Grease trap cleaning in Pļavnieki costs from €90; for a larger separator, the price depends on the volume pumped out.
Newer developments: pump stations and drainage wells
Newer buildings between the estates may have underground car parks and plant rooms below street level. Wastewater and drainage water are pumped up from them, and over time sludge, sand and grease build up in the pump wells. If the pump switches on too often or the alarm shows a high level, the well needs emptying and the floats need checking.
More details: drainage well cleaning, sewage pump stations and, if the pump has already stopped, sewage pump repair. For flooded rooms: basement pumping.
What a building manager should state in the request
- The address of the building or site and the entrance where the lid or basement door is.
- What needs pumping out: a separator, drainage well, pump station or flooded room.
- The approximate volume or, for a room, the floor area and the depth of the water.
- Whether the lid is under a parking space, and who can clear the space.
- A contact person who will open the basement or plant room.
With this information, we can give you the price before the work, and the trip won't be wasted if the basement turns out to be locked or the courtyard occupied.
What the rules say about grease and drainage
Riga's rules for the mains sewer prohibit discharging fats and food waste into the network, and also groundwater and surface water without the approval of Rīgas ūdens (Riga's water utility). This means a drainage pump can't simply be connected to the domestic sewer, and pumped-out contents must not be poured into the nearest manhole. Everything we pump out goes to a wastewater reception point.
