The neighbourhood lies on Riga's south-eastern edge by the Daugava and the Riga hydroelectric power plant (HPP) reservoir, and in lower-lying spots the groundwater can be high. There are detached houses, gardens and seasonal buildings here that need different solutions. We install septic tanks, BIO plants and sealed holding tanks, and we pump them out at Riga prices.
Dārziņi: far from the centre, close to the water
Dārziņi is one of Riga's most remote neighbourhoods, in the south-east by the Daugava and the Riga HPP reservoir. The main access is via Maskavas iela and local streets, and it is a long way to the centre. The housing includes detached houses, gardens, seasonal buildings and low-rise residential houses.
Being close to the river, the reservoir and lower-lying land means that damp and flood risk have to be assessed for each plot separately. That is not an argument against a septic tank, but it changes which system to choose and how to install it.
High groundwater: what it changes for the tank
High groundwater affects three things. First, a drain field only works if there is a dry layer of sand under the drains; if the groundwater rises to the drains in spring, the water from the septic tank is not treated. Second, groundwater can lift an empty plastic tank, so it is fixed to a concrete slab or weights. Third, groundwater gets into a tank that is not watertight, and it fills faster than the water consumption would suggest.
In these conditions people usually choose a BIO plant discharging into a ditch or with a pump that lifts the treated water higher, or a sealed holding tank. On installation: septic tank for high groundwater and holding tank installation in Dārziņi. A 2 m³ tank costs from €800, a septic tank with installation from €2,200.
Pumping when the tank is plastic
If a plastic septic tank or holding tank is in a high-groundwater zone, emptying it completely in spring can deform the tank or push it upwards. So before pumping we ask what the tank is made of and whether it is anchored. For a septic tank, we can pump out only the sediment and crust, leaving some of the liquid, or refill it with water straight after the job.
A holding tank has to be emptied completely, so anchoring is especially important for it. If you don't know whether your tank is anchored, you can check the installation documents or ask the installer. More detail: septic tank pumping in Dārziņi and holding tank pumping.
After spring floods or prolonged rain
If water has stood in the yard in lower-lying spots after spring floods or prolonged rain, it can get into the tank through the lid or the manhole neck. The septic tank then fills with rainwater, the sediment is washed out into the drain field, and the field clogs. After an event like this, we pump out the tank and inspect the lid seal; if the manhole neck is low, it can be raised.
With a BIO plant, you also need to think about electricity: the compressor and control unit are placed where they won't flood, and after a flood the plant is checked before it is switched on. Maintenance costs from €160: BIO plant maintenance.
For a permanent home: holding tank or BIO plant
If you live in Dārziņi all year, the cost of a holding tank has to be counted year by year. Example: for four people without a water meter, Riga's rules assume 36.5 m³ a year, which for a 6 m³ tank means about six pumpings. At price-list rates that is around €540 a year or more.
With a BIO plant, only the excess sludge is pumped out during maintenance; maintenance costs from €160, plus electricity for the compressor and water tests once every two years. The plant costs more to install, but for a permanent home with high groundwater the annual costs can be lower than for a holding tank. Comparison: holding tank or septic tank.
Seasonal houses and gardens
For a garden house lived in only in summer, a full septic tank with a drain field isn't always needed. Depending on water consumption, a small holding tank, a compact septic tank or a dry toilet will do. What matters is that the system is registered and the tank isn't left overfull in autumn: a frozen crust makes the next pumping harder.
Solutions: septic tank for a summer house and dry toilet pumping. If the house is in a garden community with narrow streets, pumping in a garden community is also useful.
Riga rules for houses in Dārziņi
Dārziņi is a Riga neighbourhood, so the system is registered with the Riga Housing and Environment Department, not in the neighbouring municipality. For a septic tank, the minimum is one sludge removal a year. For a holding tank, the frequency is calculated from water consumption and the tank volume, and if there is no meter, 9.125 m³ a year is assumed for each declared resident.
If fewer people actually live in the house than are declared, and this lasts at least 30 days in a row (for example, the house stands empty in winter), notify the department, because the minimum frequency depends on the number of people.

Price and neighbouring areas
Although Dārziņi is far from the centre, it is within Riga's boundaries, so pumping is charged at the price-list rate with no per-kilometre surcharge: from €75 for a smaller tank, from €90 up to 6 m³. Next door are Rumbula, Ķengarags and Šķirotava; other places: where we work.
