At one address a café's grease trap needs cleaning, at another a courtyard pipe used by several houses needs rebuilding, and at yet another a holding tank left over from the time before the connection needs pumping. We do all three jobs, and our prices are published.
What shapes the job in Āgenskalns
Āgenskalns is a historic neighbourhood of Pārdaugava with a market, parks and a mixed urban fabric. The Mārupīte stream, Māra's Pond and Arkādija Park are right here, but for wastewater work something else matters more: what the building is, where its outlet is and whether the lid or manhole can be reached from the street.
We don't assume a building's age or the condition of its pipes from the general character of the neighbourhood. Before giving a price, we find out exactly what is at your address: a connection to the city network, a tank or both, and which part of it belongs to you.
Courtyard sewers: where the responsibility of the water utility Rīgas ūdens ends
In Riga the city network ends at the control manhole 1.5–2 m from the street's red line (the official street boundary) or at the plot boundary. The pipes in the courtyard, the inspection chambers and the outlet from the house belong to the owner, and the owner is responsible for them. In old courtyards where several houses use one pipe, it is worth finding out who owns which section before a repair.
- Water in the courtyard manhole stands higher than the pipe level and does not drain away after rain.
- On the ground floor, sinks drain slowly whenever water is being used on the upper floors.
- There is a smell in the basement or by the manhole, even though the traps in the flats are fine.
Signs like these usually point to the courtyard section, not the flat. We build it new or replace it in parts: a trench, pipes laid at an even fall, inspection chambers at the bends and a connection to the control manhole. After the work the paving or lawn in the courtyard has to be restored, so the price is not set by the metres alone. More detail: sewer installation in Āgenskalns.
If there is a toilet or shower in the basement lower than the street network, the water will not flow upwards on its own. Then you need a sewage pump station or a compact lifting unit with a non-return valve.
The market area and food businesses: grease traps
Āgenskalns has a market, cafés, canteens and shops with kitchens. Riga's mains sewer regulations prohibit discharging wastewater containing fats and food waste into the network, so a kitchen needs a grease trap that is cleaned regularly.
A small separator under the sink fills up quickly and is cleaned often. A basement or underground separator needs a vacuum tanker and a clear path for the hose from the street to the lid. We agree a time outside the kitchen's working hours, refill the separator with water after cleaning, and the certificate can be shown to the building manager. If the house still has a septic tank or holding tank
If a wooden house or low-rise building is not yet connected, Riga City Council Binding Regulations No. 66 apply to it. The system must be registered with the Riga Housing and Environment Department, septic tank sludge must be removed at least once a year, and the minimum removal frequency for a holding tank is calculated from water consumption and the tank volume. By 1 May each year, a declaration of the volume removed in the previous year is submitted to the department.
If there is a city sewer in the street, compare the annual cost of removal with the price of a connection. Riga's general co-financing programme covers €1,000 for a residential house (connection pipe up to 5 m), €1,500 (5–20 m) or €2,000 (over 20 m); the application to Rīgas ūdens is submitted within three years of construction. Steps and conditions: connecting to the mains sewer. Until then, septic tank pumping in Āgenskalns from €75 will help.

Access: Kalnciema iela, Slokas iela and narrow courtyards
Kalnciema iela, Slokas iela and Raņķa dambis link Āgenskalns with the centre. At a particular house, though, other things decide it: whether a truck can stop by the gate, how wide the gateway is and how many metres it is from the tanker to the lid. The hose can be run through the courtyard, but a longer distance takes more time and can affect the price.
In your request, state the access (from the street or through the courtyard), the width of the gate and whether cars are parked in the courtyard. If several houses use the courtyard, let the neighbours know the time of the work so that the entrance is kept clear.
